Rineke Dijkstra wins the 2017 Hasselblad Award.
Rineke Dijkstra compelling works have been carefully watched over her lifetime. She is known for working on long-term projects like her series of images of Almerisa Sehric. Dijstra started shooting Sehric at the age 6, she was a young asylum seeker from Bosnia and found herself in the Netherlands. Dijstra committed to documenting Sehric’s transformation and growth from child, to teenager, to women to mother.
“Rineke Dijkstra’s photographs and films speak brilliantly to the intricacy of the portrait image: its embodiment in time; its capacity to reveal history; the contingency of the act of exchange between sitter, photographer and spectator; and, ultimately, photography’s revelation of the self,” said Duncan Forbes, Chair of the Jury for the Hasselblad Award 2017 in a statement.
Along with the prestigious title she will be awarded around $110,540 USD. The ceremony will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden on October 9th, 2017.
