An close look at punk's impact on high fashion. On display till august 14 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Met Gala is the biggest fashion event of the year and this 2013’s coincides with the museum’s Punk: From Chaos to Couture exhibition. Curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition starts with the punk movement’s beginnings in 1970s London all the way to its present-day manifestations in contemporary fashion. A major focus of the exhibition is Vivienne Westwood, who, along with Malcolm McLaren and the Sex Pistols, popularised the DIY ethic at the foundation of punk music and fashion. McLaren’s influence in the US is also documented, with nods to the punk rock aesthetics of the New York Dolls. Modern permutations of punk are displayed in couture from Chanel to Alexander McQueen.
