    Mod-Slim Moowaan

Meet Mod _Slim, tattoo addict, Fashion lover and vintage market rat as he talks about style and living his dreams.
Photography and Interview by Matthieu Lunard.

I was born in 1983 the city of Nakornsawan, just north of Bangkok.  Natornsawan is quite a small town, so I didn’t have many friends. With the friends I did have, we used to spend our time playing football, video games, hanging out in shopping malls and singing in karaoke.

As a teen, my dream was to be a rock singer. I was in a band at 16 and we were heavily influenced by The Beatles, Queen, Nirvana, King of Leon, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many other western bands. I remember that we would sometimes try and imitate the style of Kiss. We would put on make-up and do covers of their songs. I think this is where my interest in fashion started.

With music and fashion as my passions, It was easy to find my style. I would go to vintage markets hunting for the coolest baggy jeans, Harley Boots and bandanas. Slightly inspired by Johnny Depp and his disheveled boho look.

At 18 I got my first tattoo. It was a small heart on my chest done by one of my friends. After that I was addicted, i got a new one about every month. I don’t think I will ever be done with tattoos. My next one will cover my back, in Japanese Yakusa old school style.

I moved to Bangkok around the same time. I found a job selling jeans and a friends shop in Saphanphut Night Market. I worked there for five years before moving to another company in Siam Square. A few years later, I went back to my market roots and sold jeans at JJ market. Then about a year and a half ago I got involved with Black Sheep Jeans as a Marketing Director. I love this job, I feel connected to this brand and I also get to travel around Thailand.

If you ask me about Bangkok now, I’d tell you I'm not a fan of it anymore. There is so much traffic and there are too many people. I’m more into small cities like where I grew up. However I don’t mind coming back to BKK and visiting my friends in the vintage markets. I actually plan to live in Kankhonsawan in about 10 years. My sister and my two brothers live there. I miss them a lot so I try and visit once a month.

In the future I’d like to start my own company. But, I am not sure of what yet. In terms of travel; I’d like to visit Melbourne, Australia. As I have a lot of friends there and I want to see what their fashion scene is like.

My style Icons have always been Johnny Depp and my friends who work in the vintage markets in Bangkok. My friends are so creative and they consistently inspire me. Some brands I love are Saint Laurent, APC jeans, Wrangler, Momotaro, Samurai, and Redwing Shoes.

Now I am looking forward to my life in this industry and see what amazing thing is coming next.
